Germany's Epic Fail During World War One!

During World War One Germany made a lot of mistakes which caused them in my opinion be and EPIC FAIL during the war. the main topic of my discussion will be based around it's usage of U-boats and unrestricted warfare. Although unrestricted warfare was not permited due to freedom of the seas Germany felt that  there only chance of wining was to open it up again and try to stop the allies from recieving goods from the United States. Although it helped to stop Britain from gainign supplies for about six weeks in the end it resulted in the United States joining the war with the allied powers. Although this is what Germany wanted, so that they could also defeat the US, in the end it came back to bit them in the butt! The United States's support in the war secured the allies in winning the war and Germany's defeat. Their usage of unrestricted warfare not oly caused them to lose the war but also built up hostilities between countries b/c they could not "play by the rules." Germany although their illegal usage of unrestricted warfare allowed them to compete with the British navy, it caused them their ultimate defeat, which is why they were an epic fail!

  1. Hey there, I wrote about the same thing. But I didn't use the words "epic fail" :) I kind of agree that the whole unrestricted submarine warfare thing blew up in the German's face, but I can't really think of something they could have done instead. They knew Britain was stronger than them, they were going to lose if they let supplies through. So sure, it was dumb, but what else could they do?

  2. I agree that Germany made a lot of mistakes, but I don't think you can entirely blame them. From their point of veiw they were just doing what they had to to protect their own interests.

  3. This is a great question not just for Germany, but for all nations involved. This question has come up elsewhere...take a look at the post and the questions.

  4. As much as I agree that Germany had major epic fails you gotta admit for such a small country they accomplished many great feats. For example they basically held off against Britain, France, United States, and Russia all by themselves during WWI and even if they did lost it took the allies a long time to defeat one small country. They even did it again during WWII so despite their epic fail they did accomplish a lot.

  5. Yeah I'm kind of with Alex on this one. What else were they supposed to do? They couldn't win fairly because they were surrounded and smaller than the other countries. They had no other choice but to bend the rules. They were just trying to keep up with the other nations as far as the MAIN causes go, so while their actions might not be ethical they were justified.

  6. I would like to ask what would have happened if Germany had not attempted to blockade Britain with unrestricted naval warfare. I think that, unless a country had done something that desperate, the stalemate could have dragged on for years on end- something that would have cost both countries an extraordinary amount of casualties. Additionally, Germany had almost no benefits from United States trade, whereas US trade with Britain was thriving. Germany's unrestricted naval warfare was quite effective before the US got involved. Had we not been already leaning towards war with Germany, or if it were not for so much Yellow Journalism, or if it were not for many miniscule factors that influenced the United States into getting involved with fighting Germany, Germany could have succeeded in its war within a few weeks.
